Heel yeah!

Alright, now we’re getting somewhere! Have you test fitted your sock? If it’s for you, make sure you do. You should be able to pull it over your foot quite easily. It should also come to about where your leg meets the top of your foot. If you’re there, you’re ready to do the heel. If not, knit a few more rounds until you are. Here’s what mine look like …

Actually, that’s not my foot and this isn’t for me, but you get the idea. So now it’s heel time! Well, not actually. There are lots of ways to incorporate a heel into this sock, and over the course of the life of this blog, we’ll explore a few of them for sure. I did however mention that this one was going to be an afterthought heel. So that means we’re going to skip it for now. Well, not entirely. What we’re going to do is mark where the heel is going to go and put it in later – as an afterthought. This afterthought requires some forethought though.

So you need to knit to the beginning of the bottom of the foot. How do you know where that is? Well, the bottom of the foot is going to be halfway around your sock. If your sock starts at the top, just knit half the stitches you have and you’re at the bottom of the foot. Now make sure you have your left and right right (correct 😉 ) here, as up to this point they’ve been interchangeable. Once you get to the halfway mark, use a contrasting color yarn and knit across half of your stitches. This will probably be to the end of the round and the beginning of the next one.

Go back to where you were knitting with your main yarn, and knit over those stitches again (the contrasting color ones), but this time with your main yarn. Tuck in your waste yarn into the sock for now. You’ve successfully marked the spot for your afterthought heel for later. Do the same for the other sock. You should have something looking like this …

Now that both heels are in place, it’s time to get on with the rest of the sock. We’ll come back to the heel later – as an afterthought. It’s hard to picture it now as you won’t be able to test fit it again until we put the heel in, but you’re now going to be working on the vertical tube portion of your sock that goes up your leg. If you’d like to incorporate a pattern, feel free to do so if you haven’t already. I think I’ll throw in some cables just for fun. Come on, did you expect anything else? 😉 Be creative, the world is your oyster here. Just a note, if you’re adding a lot of cables, remember to add a few more stitches to account for the change in gauge – even though cable act as ribbing you don’t want it too snug!

Hugzzz 😎
