The 6 Degrees of Knitting Separation

So here it is at almost 2:00 am and I’m not asleep – like usual. You’d think I’d get a lot more done, wouldn’t you? Well anyway, I was just looking at my Google Analytics to see just where everybody that is viewing my page is coming from. It is kinda neat when you think about it that anybody can put up a website and the entire world will have access to it. Well, I think it’s kinda cool. What I think is even cooler, is that I have contact with people all over this wonderful planet that I haven’t even met yet! so I’d like to get to know some of you and what better way for us to get to know each other than to establish some sort of connection. I’m hoping that you’ve all heard of the 6 degrees of separation. The premise is that everybody is connected to everybody else by 6 steps or less – this is also known as the small world phenomenon. With social media what it is online, this is getting to be truer every day. So I’d like to start a little experiment – knitting style – and I need your help to do it.

I was (and still am) thrilled to have my first real celebrity Deborah Newton – author of Designing Knitwear – comment on a post on my blog, that I got to thinking, who else reads this blog? [Aside –  BTW Deborah, how did you find my blog?] I was/am also thinking of this small world phenomenon and would like to put the two of them together. Two of my favorite designers are Elsebeth Lavold and Alice Starmore and I’d like to see if I can link myself to either of them within 6 steps via this blog. Here’s where you can help. If you’ve read a post on my blog and know either of them, I’d really appreciate it if you could send me a comment. If you’re shy about posting a comment on the blog, let me know and I won’t make it public, or just send me an email at mrhugzzz@gmail.com. If you don’t know either of them, please spread the word about this blog to your other knitting friends – or non – and get them to read this post. I’m hoping that I could create a link within a week or two to either of them. I hope this doesn’t come off as stalkish, it’s just an experiment that I think would be fun.

A couple of other things I would like to do are as follows:

  • See how far away I can get a reader for this blog (from Vancouver, BC that is). Currently I have had a reader in Perth, Australia – a distance of 14,825km (give or take a few km).
  • I would like to get a reader from; All the countries in Europe, all the States in the USA, all the provinces in Canada, … and so on. This list could get large, but let’s start with there.
  • I would like to get a reader (other than family) from Jamaica – where I was born.

So there are some goals I have for this blog. If you can help me out by spreading the word about it that would be greatly appreciated. As I said, I’m not meaning to stalk anybody, I just think this would be fun. Then I’ll see about adding a forum on here where we can all discuss knitting in our current countries – wouldn’t that be cool? As always, I’ll keep you posted on how it goes! In the meantime, here are some interesting stats for visitors to this blog:

  • 9 browsers have been used (including a Blackberry)
  • 15 languages
  • visitors from 6 continents
  • I’ve had visitors from 24 different countries/territories including Bulgaria, Sri Lanka, Israel, and Serbia
  • the average visit time is 3mins and 3 seconds

Surprisingly, I've had more visitors from the US than Canada!

Eventually I’d like to create the best damn knitting network on the net – and I need your help! I’d like to thank everybody that has stopped in to say hello. I’ll try and find a good guest book plug in so you can leave a note!

Hugzzz 😎
