To infinity and beyond …

So did you try the moebius cast on from the last post? Nice, isn’t it? Trust me, if you’re an old schooler like me and have done it the other way (you can still find instruction online, if you really want to), this way is a treat. The other thing you may notice is that the first few “rows” are a little snug to knit. It loosens up quite well as you go along. The two most important things to remember when doing a moebius is to use a stitch marker so that you know the beginning of your row. I actually use two just cause i like to keep track when I’m half-way around. This helps with some of the experimenting I’m doing with these. The second thing is to use a reversible stitch. You need to remember that because of the 180° twist in the scarf, both sides are going to be showing at the same time.

It is not entirely necessary to have a reversible stitch, but if you choose not to, be prepared to frog. Some non-reversible stitches will produce a good effect,  while others might not. I recommend that you try smaller swatches when you’re trying to figure out what to use. The example above was an epic fail, and waaaay too many stitches for a trial. I thought a 3×2 rib would look cool, but it’s not reversible (I knew this going in), and didn’t work out. The main problem was that when you get to the flipside of the loop (past the twist), your rib becomes broken because you’re knitting on top of purl stitches and vice versa. There is a distinctive line at the center where this happens, as you can see in the picture. So what would work? Well, I’m planning on doing one in a seed stitch with a chunkier yarn. Simple yet distinguished. The garter stitch sample from the last post always works. And of course, I’m going to try and figure out one with a cable in it! But these aren’t your only options – not by a long shot. We haven’t even talked about color yet! Be creative and remember that when you make a moebius you’re working from the center out to the edges. I can’t wait to see what you come up with and to share mine with you!

Hugzzz 😎
