So, do you KIP? I do. Almost everyday. I don’t have a car so I take public transit almost everywhere and I feel great about it. Not only am I reducing my carbon footprint, I get to do lots of things on transit that I couldn’t do while driving. One of those is I get the chance to knit. This reminds me of an incident I heard about the other day. This lady is driving down the highway, knitting and steering with her knees (I assume she had cruise control). A police car pull up beside her and notices her hands aren’t on the wheel. The officer turns on his lights but the lady continues to drive, oblivious to the police car. The officer rolls down his window, turns on the siren, and starts yelling “Pull over”! The lady finally notices, rolls down her window and yells back ” No, it’s a cardigan”!

While I don’t recommend that you follow her habits, I do think you should KIP if you don’t already. It can be a very productive way to pass time. If you’re busy and don’t get enough time to knit you might think about using transit at least once a week and get some knitting done. Besides, you may as well do something other than getting stuck in traffic for an hour each day. Which reminds me, why do they call it rush hour when everybody’s standing still? There are other opportunities to knit in public. My friends know that whenever I meet up with them for coffee (I usually have tea) that I’m probably going to pull out some knitting. It’s killing two birds with one stone. They’re very tolerant because I don’t have to pay a lot of attention to the knitting so I can focus on what they’re saying and also I might be knitting something for them.

Me knitting at work ... tough job!

I’m fortunate as I get to knit when I’m at work on a movie set too. Actually the other day I was even giving lessons to some people who wanted to learn. That’s another thing – I almost have a spare set of needles and yarn on me as well. Believe it or not, three times in the last two months while I was knitting on the train, someone wanted to try the continental technique with the work I was knitting! I don’t usually mind unless I’m doing something incredibly intricate or using a luxury yarn. I’ll end this post by telling you the strangest place I’ve knitted in public. During the 2002 Winter Olympics, some of my friends and I were coming back from Whistler. We stopped at a pub in Squamish as we were in danger of missing the gold medal game between Canada and the USA in men’s ice hockey. So here we all are at this pub in Squamish watching the hockey, drinking beer, and eating burgers when out pops my knitting! Seriously – true story. I almost dropped a stitch too, when Mario Lemieux missed the open net with what would have been the game winning goal. All was fine in the end however as Canada went on to win the gold. So, where’s the strangest place you’ve ever knitted in public? If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? Come out of the closet already!

Hugzzz 😎

A kipper is someone who knits in public – KIP (Knitting in Public).
