Her name is Claudia and I met her on set on Friday while shooting a commercial. While we were in the holding area, I pulled out my knitting and she was perplexed from the start. While shad knit many a year ago in school, she hadn’t in enough years to not remember how. She also had never knit continental style as well. Claudia waited for about 30 seconds to ask me to show her how to do it. Within about 20 minutes she had learned the long-tailed cast on and was knitting her first garter stitch swatch (even though she didn’t know it was called that yet)!

She quickly got comfortable enough with the knit stitch to learn the purl. Later in the day I was able to teach her how to alternate between knits and purls in the same row. I also discovered that when learning the continental style of knitting, knitters don’t tend t have the “increase” problems that knitters learning the traditional method do. You know the one where you get that extra “yarn over” stitch when you don’t bring the yarn between the needles, but just over the top of the needle? Anyway, I also realized that Claudia was a natural at this and was also an addict. She was asking about cables (I was working on a cabled scarf) and was already trying to figure out how to put a diagonal line in the knitting with the purl stitches. She wanted to slant the rib pattern.

We actually had to do some work (I hate when work gets in the way of my knitting), so I didn’t get to teach her anything more on Friday. On Saturday we met at a Michael’s so I could teach her about yarn (I know, I know, but it’s really close to where she lives), and then we bought a crochet hook and went to a nearby coffee shop for lesson 2. I was shocked when I saw how much knitting she had done already. Here is a picture of what she pulled out of her bag to show me.

She had already figured out how to put in the diagonal slant with the purl stitches she had asked about the day before. So on Saturday i showed her how to fix mistakes with the crochet hook and how to make cables. She started a “scarf” with a left slant cable, a right slant cable, and a cabled braid! In three weeks Claudia will be returning to Germany. I am sure she will be knitting up a storm there. I can’t wait to teach her more before she leaves. She is like a sponge, just soaking up all this knitting information. It’s so neat to see someone when they’re bitten by the knitting bug. It’s really inspiring! I can’t wait to see what she will be knitting 6 months from now. Welcome to the fold Claudia!

Hugzzz 😎

Hey all,I’d like to take the space in this post to introduce a new knitter.
