If you knit regularly and even pick up a catalogue or two over a season, you’ll probably have heard that Alice Starmore was releasing an updated copy of her very popular Aran Knitting book. If you didn’t know or haven’t heard, Alice Starmore has released an updated copy of her very popular book – Aran Knitting. It is as amazing as the first one – because it is the first one – but with MORE Alice, MORE Star, MORE Alice Starmore. I was lucky enough to get my copy today from a new friend who had mistakenly ordered 2 of them. Thank you so much Deidra, I was planning on getting this within the next 2 weeks for sure.

I haven’t had the time to go through it from cover to cover yet, but I will soon. In the meantime, here is a brief breakdown on the layout of the book.

The first chapter is about the history of Aran – not just the knitting but the islands and the culture that sprang forth such an amazing tradition and legacy in knitting. It looks to be fascinating reading, whether you are a historian or not.

Chapter 2 starts the journey into Aran patterns – the distinct textures that make Aran Aran. Alice starts with a chart key and then begins at the beginning with rope cables – and progresses through everything I have ever known to be called Aran in nature – from braids to bobbles to traveling lines to honeycombs and more!

Chapter 3 is about classic Aran patterns. I have to make Aranmor for myself and there are additional sizes (smaller) for the very popular and classic Aran knit Na Craga. All of the patterns from the first book are back and a few new ones two.

Chapter 4 is probably my favorite as it is about Celtic Designs. As most of you know I have a huge thing for anything Aran, and the Celtic knots just captivate me in a way that nothing else can. The great thing about the designs is that it uses a technique called capping cables to start and stop the designs on the background that is entirely hypnotic and stunning. Make anything in this chapter and you will be swamped with compliments and requests to duplicate it for your friends. Of course, the favorite St. Brigid is back!

The last chapter, number 5, is about designing an Aran Sweater with information on where you can get the yarns used in the book – designed by Alice herself.

You can find this book just about anywhere by now from your LYS to Amazon or Chapters. I recommend you pick up 2. Her first book is selling for up to $400 on eBay and through Amazon! Another great tidbit about this book – it’s a green edition, so there is some recycled paper used in it’s content. Hey, every little bit helps. So look to see me sporting something either from or inspired by this book before too long. And if you haven’t gotten one yet, my only question is “What the hey are you waiting for”? Christmas is too far away to wait for this!

Hugzzz 😎

My knitting library has a new favorite item – Alice Starmore’s Aran Knitting.
