As some of you know it was my birthday on Saturday (August 28th) and I have kinda been celebrating for a little bit. Where I come from you celebrate for a week anyway, so no problem as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, I kinda got caught without any back-up tips drafted up so I put up some wonderful pictures of Lori wearing Angel – the aran shrug – instead. As a result, I am now posting the Tuesday’s tips because I have also been busy on set. Today we were shooting the next Frank’s Red Hot Sauce commercial – you know the one with the old lady that says “I put that S**T on everything!”? It actually wasn’t bad and you’ll get a good laugh if it makes it to print. Anyway, enough of that. I’m working on getting the Angel pattern done and up here tomorrow and/or Friday. I will have the pattern available for sale and I will also re-write the ebook to include the pattern in it. Don’t worry – if you have already bought the ebook, you will be able to buy the pattern for the difference between the two. More on that later. Here are this week’s tips …

Bargain Yarns – are just a short trip away. If you’re looking for real bargain yarns, go to your local thrift shop and look for the real wool sweaters that are usually tucked away in the back somewhere or hanging in a corner (don’t they know they shouldn’t hang them?). Don’t worry about the sizes, you’re only interested in the yarn. When you get home, unravel them and wind the yarn in skeins using a knitty noddy. See the next tip if you don’t have one or know what one is.

Knitty Noddy – is a tool that is used to wind yarn into skeins. Why? See the next tip! You can buy one from your local LYS or make one with two pieces of wood and a dowel. Here’s how. Take two pieces of wood about a 12″ x 2″x 2″. Get a piece of wooden dowel about half as long as you want the diameter of the skein to be. This doesn’t have to be exact. Drill a hole in the center of each of the pieces the same size as the thickness of the dowel. Place the dowel into each hole and align the wood pieces at right angles to each other. You have a noddy. To use it, wind the yarn starting at one tip of one of the wood pieces and go to the next end of the other piece of wood. Then go to the next end of the first piece and then the second end of he second piece. You should now be back where you started and you have made one loop. Continue in this established pattern until all of your yarn has been wound!

Here is a link showing the process … Knitty Noddy Skein

A nitty Noddy with yarn ...

Steam that skein – If you’ve unwound an old sweater or some yarn that was previously in a ball for an extended period of time, it will probably be very curly. To get rid of the curls and return the yarn to a very workable and straight state, get out your steamer and run it over it until the curls are gone. If you don’t have a steamer, you can use silicone gloves and hold it over a boiling kettlte to get the same effect.

Skeins to dye for – Before you reuse that yarn, you might want to dye it. Dyeing it is easier in its current state as a skein. You can also ‘hand paint’ it and get some very unique and interesting color variegation as well. Try is and see how you like it.

Knitty noddies – make great wall decorations when they are not being used. I rotate the two wooden pieces so they are in the same lateral plane and place it on the wall. Two strategically placed nails keep it in place and it’s a great conversation starter when you have friends over for a visit.

Color swatcher – A knitty noddy can also show you how colors will look as stripes by winding them around it. Or if you’re using variegated yarn, a few wraps around a larger noddy will give you a very good representation of what the yarn will look like knit up without having to actually knit it up!

Check in again next week for more tips!

Hugzzz 😎

Hi everybody, this is a special Wednesday (Hump Day) edition of Tuesday’s Tips.
