Color and Texture …

[Translate] For most of us, there is usually a choice between color and texture when creating a piece. I was with Shoshana from Wool Is Not Enough the other day when I saw something that allows for both. Sho is working on a blanket for a friend’s wedding. The blanket consists of a collection of 12″ squares that are sewn together to form the blanket. One square in particular caught my eye … here is a picture of it. This is a square from the book The Great American Afghan, and it is done using the Ultra Alpaca by […]

Getting ready for the Olympics!

[Translate] Yup, you read the title right. Most of us haven’t even started thinking of what we’re making for Christmas yet, but England is well into preparations for next year’s summer Olympics. It seems that a bunch of knitters, actually from all over Leicester, have been thinking about it too. In fact, they’ve been doing a little more than thinking. To date, there are over 10,000 knit and crochet 6 inch squares that have been collected for what I am sure is going to be the largest blanket ever! Above is a picture of the blanket still under construction. […]

A Common Thread Road Trip …

[Translate] Well, I have finally set a date for the first Common Thread outing. As it turns out, it will also be a road trip. For those of you not located close enough geographically to participate with our group, I invite you to try and organize one of your own and see what you can do. Even a dishcloth will be fine. If you are close enough geographically to participate with our group though, book Saturday, January 29th on your calendar. On that day we will be traveling to Victoria, BC to visit three yarn shops. I have worked […]

More Cable Adventures …

[Translate] I’d like to start this post by thanking all the people that gave me feedback and encouragement while working out these cable braids. I’ve figured out all the math formulas that I need to for the cable braids and am confident that they will work as I have knitted up a sample 16 strand braid. It actually starts out as two 8 strands that then merge into a 16 and then back to two 8s. Yes, it was a lot of knitting for a sample, but I wanted to make sure the pattern and formulas worked before I […]

Barrington braids on …

[Translate] Hey, I hope everybody that celebrates it had a great Easter! Guess what? I did a cable braid of 10 strands! Yup, Barrington10 has been created. As it turns out, the 10 strands take 32 rows to do and like with the 8 strand, you have to do two repeats of the pattern to get the full effect. When you first look at the braid it looks like the BB or the Saxon, but wider, which it is. The thing that I noticed is the ever increasing lattice diamond in the middle of the braid. It is a […]
