In this episode in KnitU we look at cables. You may know that cables are my favourite texture and in this episode I show you how to make them.
Here is the chart and written instructions for the cable that I did in the episode. It is a simple 6 strand cable that crosses every 6 rows.
Row 1 (RS): Sl wyif, p2, k6, p2, k1. (12 sts)
Row 2 and all WS rows: Sl, k2, p6, k3.
Row 3: Sl wyif, p2, 3/3 RC, p2, k1.
Row 5: Repeat row 1.
Stitch Glossary
knit : Knit.
purl : Purl.
slip : Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn at back.
slip purlwise with yarn in front : Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front.
3/3 RC : Slip next 3 stitches to cable needle and place at back of work, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
As I said in the segment, you can change the direction of the cross and the frequency as you like, as long as you keep it consistent. Experimenting with these factors will give you an appreciation of the effect these values have on the aesthetics of the cable!

I was extremely fortunate last year to get to meet one of my knitting idols, Susan Crawford! She invited me to stay on her farm for the weekend and I was doubly fortunate as her daughter, Charlie, was hosting a supper club event on the Saturday evening. She is an amazing cook and this event was fantastic. I’ve done a separate video of Charlie here, where you can find out more about who she is and what she does.
Over the course of the weekend I got to know quite a bit about Susan, Gavin, Misty, Jake, Elwood, and all the other critters on the farm. Needless to say I was absolutely blown away by the amount of things this brand represents and does. On the farm, they breed sheep (and 2 goats), produce wool, run retreats and workshops, operate a yarn store and cafe, produce and publish books, and more! I found out that operating a working farm is more than a full time job and was absolutely amazed at how well Susan and Gavin are able to accomplish all the tasks they do.
On top of all this, Susan is a breast cancer survivor, and has designed 2 shawl patterns for the #fubc campaign. The third segment in Episode 11 is about publishing a knitting/crochet magazine. I was thrilled to get to sit down with Kate and Jo of Knit Now and Your Crochet and Knitting magazines. They were able to tell me (and you when you watch the show) all that goes into putting together the publications. And they should know as they put out 24 issues per year between them and help on another 14 for Crochet Now – another publication under the Practical Publishing umbrella.
It was a delight to see what goes into the making of these magazines and Jo even did a beginner crochet KnitU segment while I was there. Next time I’ll get her to do another one and get Kate to do a knitting one as well.
