Knitting in the Shadows …

Shadow Knitting may be new to you, but I assure you it’s been around for awhile. I myself have done a few posts on it in the past, and there’s lots of information about it all over. There’s books (search Vivian Hoxboro), groups (check Ravelry), and videos (look on You Tube). This post is about breaking it down a bit and hopefully giving you the courage to try it yourself. It’s an extremely simple thing to do once you make a chart as it’s only knits and purls. It can be done in 1 or 2 colors (or more […]

Elementary revisited …

Well, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that Tammy, a reader of this blog, recognized the correct stitch pattern on the scarf worn by Lucy in the episode of Elementary from last Sunday. She recognized it as an alternating stocking stitch, reverse stocking stitch pattern, the way it appears when done in the round. As a matter of fact, the thought struck her when she saw the Waves scarf I made and put up the pattern for here on this blog! After seeing Tammy’s comment, I went back and scrutinized the scarf in the show, […]

The return of the slouchie …

Well, it never really went away, but I say return as this is the second post I’ve done with a slouchie hat in it. The great thing about slouchies is that you don’t have to have a ton of hair to wear them and have them look good on you. I mean, yes, rastahs have been wearing them for ages with their dreads usually hidden by  colorful bands of wool, but you don’t have to. Diane is proof of that. This is her wearing one I whipped up on set a few weeks ago. As you can see, I […]

The 6 hour Slouchie …

Wow – where did May go? It’s been an incredibly busy month for me and I apologize for the lack of posts. I really have to do some ahead of time for times like these! Anyway, this post is a combination of a pattern and a yarn review. Awhile ago, Sho from Wool Is Not Enough, asked me to come up with a sample for a yarn she had … Latte by Ella Rae. It’s a chunky yarn that is made of Microfiber (40%), Silk (30%), and Baby Alpaca (30%). The feel of the yarn is exquisite – very […]

The mistaken mistake …

The Sunday knitting groups that I help teach were recently doing a session on the mistake rib. I love this rib … mostly. It’s very elastic, and very simple to make. Unfortunately when I first did it, I didn’t realize how much it would stretch vertically. As a result, the raglan sleeved sweater that I made using the precisely measured gauge swatch was a little big – even for me! Lesson learned – not all ribs are alike. Yes, this rib is reversible and it rib does stretch horizontally very well, like most ribs, but it also has quite […]
