The Bright World of Wool …

This past weekend, we had the 3 installment of Knit City here in Vancouver and it was the best one yet! I took some photos and will have a review about it later this week, but I want to send a shout out to an amazing pair of artists that were there in this post.

Nikki and Melissa are 2 fibre artists that live here in Salmon Arm, BC. If you’ve never been there, you’ll definitely want to check it out. To say it is picturesque is a bit of an understatement. Just a bit – lol. I met Melissa at Knit City last year and her work is featured in the episode of the knitting show that I did last year. Melissa creates masks and assorted goodies with wool. Most of it is felted, but the pieces are multifaceted and unbelievably detailed and realistic. There will be links at the end of this post to their presence online and contact information.

When I saw Melissa this weekend, she was a little excited to share some news that I’m going to now share with you. Mel and Nikki recently found out about a contest to create a NEW Dark Crystal character. Seeing as they heard about the contest late, they only had 3 weeks to complete a character and enter it into the contest. Putting their creative caps on (figuratively and literally), they hammered out NYM, an original creation made out of mostly felted wool. When I first saw NYM I thought she was a recreation of a character from the original movie, since it has been a while since I saw the movie. I was blown away when I found out that she was an original creation from the minds and hands of Nikki and Mel.

The figure stands about 2 feet tall and is striking in the detail. These pictures give you some idea but seeing it in person is indescribable.

Mel and Nikki didn’t win the contest, but placed in the top 10 and received an honorable mention. As such, they have been invited to New York in order to meet the Hanson’s in person. They have launched a crowd funding campaign in order to raise the money to go later this month. I will definitely be helping out and I’m asking if you are able to that you do too. I firmly believe this is just the crack from the door that will open wide for them once people realize what they can do. I’m sure that there will be much more in store for these talented artists, and people will soon find out the amazing things us fibre artists are capable of.

I’m sure they will appreciate it if you can check out their campaign, and even if you aren’t able to help out, if you could share the link(s) below with your friends and Social Media contacts. here’s the link to their campaign …
