Well, today is officially the first day of spring, so I guess it’s fitting that I’m deciding on the Knit-A-Long, huh? For the Knit-A-Long I didn’t get a lot of responses as to what to knit, so I’ll take it on myself to decide on something I’d like to make. My first thought was a vest, as I don’t have one, but I recently picked up the new issue of Vogue and saw something in there that I have to make. On page 60, there is a fitted top that looks really nice. It has a lattice back and fitted bodice in front … ah, forget it. Here’s a picture!
The pattern in the magazine says that this is a level 3 of 4, so it is good for the intermediate – advanced knitter. I am sure however, that we will be able to help you along if you decided to attempt this. That is providing that you are a little further along than just knowing the knit and purl stitch. The project calls for 3 balls of Artyarns Silk Pearl and 3 balls of Artyarns Beaded Pearl and Sequin (a silk with glass beads and sequins). in the medium size. You will need 4 of each if you are making the large. I am going to attempt to source these exact yarns (perhaps in a different color though), and/or find a suitable substitute if that proves too difficult. If you want to knit this along with me (I hope to start next week if I can get the yarn), you can find the pattern in the current issue of Vogue Knitting International (Spring/Summer 2011). I guess I’ll have to decide what to do with it once I make it though – it’s not really my style –
. Maybe one of my cousins in Jamaica will fit it? Any takers??

Do I have to live in Jamaica and/or be your cousin?

If I made that for my grand daughters their Moms would skin me alive, but it is a cute sweater. Maybe I could make it and enter it in the fair and show them what an artiste I am.
What weight yarn is the Artyarns? Can only hope I have something left that is it’s equivalent. Will have to try and get a copy of Vogue online after the 1st of the month cuz they don’t sell it anywhere within 100 miles of me.

Sandi brings up a good point. Is it allowed to enter a knitted/crocheted item in a fair or other contest with a pattern you did not invent yourself? I figured you would know.

Nope! And it would get delivered a whole lot quicker! LOL. Of course I’d have to know your size and color of choice …

That sounds like a great idea C. Can you get the gauge when you double it? How would you get beads on it when it’s been doubled?

Sandi, the gauge is 20 stitches over 4 inches. They used a 4mm needle in the pattern, but of course you could change that to suit your needs. Check the post tomorrow for a possible substitute yarn.

It would depend on the contest I suppose. If they’re judging your knitting, I would think it is. If it is just about the design, then obviously not. It might be allowed if you gave credit to the designer. The thing with knitting pattern copyrights is that they are so easy to circumvent that most knitters don’t bother copywriting their patterns and it becomes a question of the morals of the knitter.
